
How to Revive a Wet Phone Without Making It Worse

A phone dropped in a sink, pool, toilet, or rain puddle creates a fast decision point. The actions you take in the first few minutes can limit corrosion, protect your data, and improve the odds of repair. Knowing how to revive a wet phone is less about a household trick and more about stopping electrical damage before it spreads.
Water resistance can help, but it is not a guarantee. A device with an IP rating may survive a brief splash when its seals are intact, yet age, impact damage, heat, prior repairs, and worn adhesive can reduce that protection. Salt water, chlorinated pool water, soapy water, coffee, and other liquids add contaminants that can cause more damage than clean water alone.
How to Revive a Wet Phone: Act Before It Powers On
If your phone is still on, turn it off immediately. Do not test the screen, open apps, place a call, or plug it in to see whether it charges. Electricity moving through moisture and minerals can create shorts on the charging circuit, display connectors, battery system, or motherboard.
Remove the case, any external accessories, and the SIM card tray if your model has one. Gently blot the phone with a clean, lint-free cloth. Hold it with the charging port facing downward and lightly tap it against your hand to encourage liquid to drain. Do not shake it aggressively. Forceful shaking can drive moisture farther inside the phone.
If the device fell into salt water, a sugary drink, coffee, or chemically treated water, professional cleaning becomes more urgent. Even after visible moisture evaporates, residue remains behind. That residue can corrode microscopic components and connections over time, causing delayed failures days or weeks later.
Keep It Off and Unplugged
A wet phone may appear normal at first. That does not mean it is safe to use. Internal liquid can sit beneath shields, connectors, cameras, and battery contacts where it is impossible to see from the outside.
Keep the phone powered down. Do not connect a charger, wireless charger, computer cable, headphone adapter, or external battery. Avoid pressing buttons repeatedly. If the phone powered off on its own after exposure, leave it off rather than attempting a restart.
For phones with a removable battery, remove it only if the manufacturer designed the device for safe consumer battery removal. Most modern iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones, Google Pixel phones, and similar devices use sealed batteries. Trying to pry open a sealed device without the correct tools can crack the display, damage the battery, or compromise the water-resistant seal further.
What Not to Do With a Wet Phone
The most common bad advice is to put the phone in rice. Rice does not reliably remove moisture from inside a phone, and rice dust can settle in the charging port, speaker openings, and other connectors. It can create a second repair issue while delaying proper diagnostics.
Avoid heat as well. Do not use a hair dryer, oven, microwave, heating vent, or direct sunlight. High heat can warp display layers, loosen adhesives, harm the battery, and accelerate corrosion. Compressed air is also a poor choice because it can push liquid deeper into the device.
Do not insert paper towels, cotton swabs, toothpicks, or metal tools into the charging port. A charging port contains delicate contact pins. Bending or contaminating them can turn a liquid-exposure incident into a charging-port replacement.

Do not charge or power on the phone.
Do not use rice, heat, or compressed air.
Do not shake the device hard or press every button.
Do not assume a water-resistance rating means there is no internal damage.
Let the Phone Air-Dry Safely
After blotting the outside, place the phone on a dry, flat surface in a room with normal airflow. Position the charging port downward if possible. A fan moving room-temperature air nearby can help evaporation, but do not aim high-pressure air directly into the ports.
Many newer phones display a liquid-detection warning when moisture is present in the charging port. Take that warning seriously. Wait until the warning clears naturally before considering a cable connection, and understand that a cleared warning only indicates the port may be dry enough to use. It does not confirm that the internal circuits are dry or undamaged.
The correct waiting time depends on how much liquid entered the device and what kind of liquid it was. A few raindrops on the exterior are very different from a phone submerged for several minutes. Waiting 24 hours may help with minor exposure, but time alone does not remove mineral residue or corrosion from the internal board.
If the phone starts normally after drying, back it up as soon as it is safe to do so. Use a cloud backup or a computer connection only after the device is dry and operating normally. Watch for warning signs such as intermittent charging, screen flickering, muffled speakers, foggy cameras, overheating, rapid battery drain, random restarts, or Face ID and fingerprint sensor failures. These symptoms can indicate corrosion or liquid damage beneath the surface.
When a Wet Phone Needs Professional Diagnostics
Bring the device in promptly if it was submerged, exposed to salt water or beverages, will not power on, shows a liquid warning that will not clear, or behaves differently after drying. Speed matters because corrosion can continue after the water itself has evaporated.
A proper liquid-damage evaluation goes beyond checking whether the phone turns on. Protect Your Data After Liquid Exposure
Data protection is often the real priority. Photos, messages, authentication apps, work files, school assignments, and contacts may be more valuable than the phone itself. Do not erase the phone or perform a factory reset just because it is acting strangely after water exposure. A reset cannot repair corrosion, and it may remove data that could otherwise be recovered.
